Side cameras mounted on 10 Decatur school buses have caught 646 motorists illegally passing when the stop arm is extended. Those drivers have subsequently been issued citations.

The cameras, providing three photos of violating autos including one with the license plate number, have been in service since the first day of school. With City Schools Decatur hitting the 100-day mark last week, those stats are on par with other Georgia school systems, according to American Traffic Solutions. Decatur contracted with the company to provide equipment and monitor data. The statewide average is six to 10 violations per day per 10 buses.

A first-offense ticket is $300, second offense $750 and third $1,000.
