Victims of a fire that swept through an apartment building in Stone Mountain last week tell Channel 2 Action News that they feel like victims all over again, since someone allegedly went through their units and stole belongings that escaped the flames.

Tenants said they were promised there would be 24-hour surveillance of the structure, in the 500 block of 3 Oaks Bend, after the Wednesday night blaze.

But when families came to collect their belongings Monday, they discovered someone had broken through the plywood put up by maintenance crews and gone from apartment to apartment, ransacking the place.

The burglars took “DVDs, CDs, purses, pants, jewelry, rings -- anything they could get their hands on,” resident Ashleigh Brown told Channel 2. “Somebody stoops down low enough to come and steal stuff like that -- I don't understand it.”

Brown, 23, lives on the third floor of the building and had to drop her baby to a neighbor and lower her 3-year-old by a rope to escape the fire.

Four people, including Brown’s children, were transported to a hospital in stable condition. Brown’s family and 11 other families were burned out of their apartments.

Maurice Daniel, who lives on the first floor, said thieves stole several thousand dollars in electronics from him – “50-inch TV, sister’s laptop, game system, PlayStation.”

Police are investigating.
