Animal rescue crews on Wednesday afternoon freed a trapped 1,500-pound bull that had fallen into an abandoned well on a farm in South Fulton County.
More than a dozen workers with a crane truck pulled the animal out of the hole shortly after 2:30 p.m., ending the long drama on Bethlehem Road in Fairburn.
Police and firefighters from Fulton County, Milton and Cherokee County arrived after the call came in to Fulton County police at 8:55 a.m. to help save the bull who was lodged snugly in a well estimated to be about 15 feet deep and narrow.
Workers at first used a backhoe to dig a larger opening for the bull to escape through on its own, but the animal “decided not to come,” said Milton fire chief Bill Bourn. He said the bull was just too exhausted. But, after plenty of maneuvering, and with the use of various rescue tools, the bull was freed.
The bull was discovered Wednesday morning.
Abel Ambrosio Lopez, who works on the farm, said: “We started looking around (for the bull) and were not seeing him. We were surprised when we found him in an old well.”
Rescue officials said the bull appeared to be uninjured.
