The city of Brookhaven will relocate the Young Girl’s Statue for Peace to Blackburn Park in the next few weeks.
“We want to better accommodate those who wish to visit the statue,” said Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst. “Blackburn Park will offer more space, more parking and a more accessible location for what is surely to become a landmark in our city.”
The statue was unveiled on June 30 in Blackburn Park II, which is located along Blair Circle on three acres in a residential area with limited space and limited parking. That neighborhood experienced increased traffic during the past weekend due to visitors to the statue.
The nearby 51-acre Blackburn Park is located at 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road and is more accessible to the public. The City is currently exploring locations in Blackburn Park to house the memorial.
“We applaud the City of Brookhaven’s decision to help bring greater awareness to the Comfort Women tragedy through the more prominent placement of the Young Girl’s Statue for Peace,” said Mr. Baik Kyu Kim, Chair of the Atlanta Comfort Women Memorial Task Force. “The City Council has been a leader in taking a very strong stand against human and sex trafficking. We are grateful for their proactive move to provide greater accessibility to the memorial.”
Approximately 300 people were in attendance for the unveiling of the statue, which was built as a memorial to the Comfort Women of World War II and was presented to the City by the Atlanta Comfort Women Memorial Task Force. The monument recognizes and brings educational awareness to the danger and injustice of human trafficking both worldwide and locally.
