October has been a month of celebrations for one lucky Jonesboro resident.

First her birthday, then her wedding anniversary and now, Bessie Irene Rawls, 54, is celebrating winning $277,844 playing Fantasy 5 in the Georgia Lottery.

The breast cancer survivor says she feels especially lucky to have won the lottery while celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“I’ll never forget this month,” said Rawls. “I just can’t believe it.”

Rawls proudly speaks of being a breast cancer survivor. “I love to tell the world that,” she said. “I’ve gone through a lot of things.”

A drug store shift supervisor, Rawls said she plans to use her winnings to pay bills and help her children.

“We might take a cruise,” she added.

Rawls bought her Quik Pik top prize ticket for the Oct. 14 Fantasy 5 drawing at Sonoco Food Mart, 900 Highway 138 West, Stockbridge.

A second top prize ticket was sold in Valdosta. Winning numbers from the drawing were: 16-28-34-36-39.
