91-year-old grandmother dies in house fire

A 91-year-old grandmother died in a house fire early Friday, state officials said.

The fire, which was reported just before 3:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of U.S. 29 North, killed Coweta County resident Ellinor Madrak and destroyed the home, according to Glenn Allen of the state insurance commissioner’s office.

Madrak’s grandson, 51-year-old Jeff Scott, who is legally blind, escaped the fire with minor injuries, Allen said in a news release.

The blaze has been ruled accidental.

“A fire investigator with my office has determined that this fire started in the attic of the home and was caused by an electrical malfunction,” Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said in the release.

It’s the 98th deadly house fire in Georgia this year, Allen said.

The investigation was expected to shut down the highway for most of the day, Coweta County authorities said.

“Please make travel plans accordingly,” officials said.
