A nearly 2-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car in front of her house on Memory Lane in Lawrenceville on Tuesday, police said.

The child was rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition about 4 p.m. and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

Pihera said the driver who hit the child did not stop and police believe they have the driver in custody, but have not called the incident a hit-and-run.

“We don’t know exactly which vehicle is involved,” Pihera said. “We do know that there is evidence in the roadway and the driveway of the home, so we are trying to figure out how everything took place.”

The family had gone to the hospital and had not been interviewed by police at 6 p.m.

“Incidents involving the death of a very young child are always difficult for the community and law enforcement,” Pihera said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they deal with this tragic loss.”
