A deputy-involved shooting was reported in Jasper County about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

A man was killed in a deputy-involved shooting Monday in Jasper County, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

The deputies involved in the incident in the 600 block of Grandview Road, which is near Jackson Lake Road in Monticello, are OK.

Officials told Channel 2 Action News they received a call about 11:30 a.m. that a woman who was walking on Grandview Road was approached by a man who pulled a gun on her.

Deputies made contact with the man at his home, Channel 2 reported, but he refused to surrender.

He said he would have to be killed rather than be taken into custody, Sheriff Donnie Pope told Channel 2.

The man fired first before deputies returned fire, killing him, Pope said.

The man’s name has not been released.

The GBI is investigating, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Jasper County is about 58 miles southwest of Atlanta.
