A man died after a Habersham County sheriff’s deputy shot him during a traffic stop Sunday, officials say.

The shooting happened about 9 a.m. outside of Clarkesville on Tom Arrendale Street, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Habersham County sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Mat Wurtz said deputies were patrolling in the area and searching for an aggravated assault suspect.

When deputies pulled over a car matching the description, the driver was shot.

Wurtz did not say why the deputy fired on the man or whether the man had a weapon.
