At the 46th Annual Eddie Glennon Gamboree hosted last Saturday by The Braves 400 Fan Club, the fan club and charitable organization spread the important message of baseball throughout the community.

“There is a social level to this club where [Atlanta] Braves fans come together to cheer on our team, and there is the community level where we reach out and support our local programs and youth,” said Braves 400 Fan Club President Rick Wheeler.

The event, held at the Atlanta Marriott Century Center, honored the 1991 and 1992 Atlanta Braves National League Champion team while donating scholarships and funds to local colleges and foundations to keep the spirit of the sport alive in the community. Two $1,500 Phil Niekro Scholarships were given to baseball programs at Georgia College and State University and North Georgia College and State University. Donations were also made to youth league Team Georgia and The Brian Jordan Foundation.

“We wanted to focus on the smaller colleges to use the money towards the baseball programs,” said Wheeler. “At the same time, we reach out to the youth because it’s where the love of the sport starts. By contributing to these programs and our youth, they become fans of baseball and also develop the values and ethics team sports like these these bring to someone young.”

In its community outreach, the Braves 400 Fan Club brings baseball to disadvantaged youth in the community through the Reach Out Program. Last year, more than 50 children got to experience a day at Turner Field -- watching the game, meeting players and running the bases. Additionally, the club also furnishes baseball equipment to local baseball programs and hosts various events for youth programs.

With over 200 people in attendance, the nonprofit’s largest fundraiser raised over $5,500 for community programs and outreach.
