A 14-year-old Cherokee County boy was taken into custody Monday after investigators found several explosive devices inside the home he shares with his parents, according to police.
A tipster told Canton police about the possibility of explosives in the home, in the 100 block of Woodbury Lane in the River Green subdivision, and officers were dispatched to the residence Monday morning, Todd Vande Zande, assistant police chief, told the AJC.
Officers initially conducted a "knock and talk" investigation before securing and executing a search warrant, Vande Zande said.
The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and a GBI bomb squad also were called to the residence. GBI investigators entered the dwelling around 12:30 p.m. after obtaining a search warrant, John Bankhead, GBI spokesman, told the AJC.
Inside, officers found six explosive devices that could have caused major destruction, Vande Zande said. The bomb squad detonated one device at the scene.
"We don't have any indication that there was any attack planned," Vande Zande said.
The teen, whose name was not released, was taken in for questioning along with his parents, who were cooperating with the investigation, Vande Zande said.
The boy was charged with manufacturing and the distribution of destructive devices, and he was charged as a juvenile because of his age, Vande Zande said. Testing will be conducted on the explosives to determine what they contained, the assistant chief said.
