Bowen Homes demolished

Glover said about 70 percent of Bowen tenants received vouchers to cut the cost of rent in their new homes. The families will receive 27 months of counseling and other assistance.

Glenda McKennie, a former librarian at Bowen Homes, carries a brick from the demolition.

About 535 families were relocated from Bowen, located in northwest Atlanta, near I-285 and Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway.

Atlanta housing officials believe they will be the first big city to remove all of its housing projects.

The housing authority plans to redevelop the 64-acre site into a mixed-income neighborhood.

Bowen Homes opened its doors in 1964. It was a sprawling complex of two-story, orange-colored duplexes, with an elementary school and a library.
