The Canton Police Department said it will start a body camera program after the first of the year, using 33 devices purchased for officers in the patrol, traffic, detective and code enforcement divisions. Officers in those divisions are finishing up training.

Police said the cameras worn on fronts of uniforms will record high-resolution audio and video using a wide-angle view and that video of any single incident will also be auto-linked with in-car camera units to build up a broader and more accurate portrayal of incidents.

Police said the cameras should have several benefits, such as helping to strengthen police accountability and resolve complaints against officers, while helping to improve performance and prevent confrontations.
