Boats, monster trucks and home furnishings will combine to make downtown traffic extra congested this weekend.
The Monster Jam tour of monster trucks makes a stop Saturday night at the Georgia Dome, while next door at the Georgia World Congress Center, the Atlanta Boat Show continues through Sunday.
A few blocks away, the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market continues through Tuesday at the AmericasMart. While the truck and boat shows are open to the public, the AmericasMart event is not.
Also downtown, the Hawks play Houston Friday night at Philips Arena.
Several construction projects will have interstate lanes blocked this weekend, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Sign work on I-85 will require two left lanes to be closed in both directions nightly between Clairmont and Lenox roads, while various single-lane closures will be in place in and around the Ga. 400/I-85 interchange project.
Also, one right southbound lane of the Buford-Spring Connector will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night for bridge joint replacement from Lindbergh Drive to Monroe Drive.
On I-20, up to three eastbound lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 4:30 a.m. Saturday between Hill Street and Cherokee Avenue for maintenance work on a gas line.
All of the construction projects and lane closures are weather permitting.
“We really want to get some work done this weekend, but I think we’ll be dodging the rain,” said Shun Pringle, a district construction engineer for the DOT. “But hopefully, we can make some progress.”
Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said the chance of rain is 30 percent Friday and 100 percent Saturday. The rain should end Saturday afternoon, leaving sunny skies for Sunday, Nitz said.
Highs will be in the low 60s Saturday and mid-50s Friday, with lows in the 40s.
