Decatur’s school board met with four superintendent search firms Friday and is scheduled to make a final choice during a special session 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Central Office/Beacon Municipal Center, 125 Electric Avenue. Earlier this month the board also met with the Georgia School Board Association’s search service, which selected current Superintendent Phyllis Edwards in 2003.
Friday’s intensive three-hour session included the revelation some searches can last only two to three months, as opposed to the Decatur board’s original projection of six to nine months. The firms agreed the ideal start time for a new superintendent is July 1 or Jan. 1, though many larger systems (like Atlanta and DeKalb County) prefered hiring an interim thus allowing for an extended search.
Edwards, only the ninth superintendent in City Schools Decatur history, resigned March 10, though she remains on the job through at least the end of the school year.
