Block an Athens intersection, get a ticket
Starting Monday, flashing blue lights and a $100 fine may be in your future if a red light suddenly leaves you stuck in one of downtown Athens’ busy intersections.
Now that classes are back in full swing at the University of Georgia and surrounding public and private schools, traffic tie-ups are “monumental,” the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said Wednesday.
The headaches are exacerbated by drivers’ trying to squeeze across intersections as the light changes, only to end up blocking vehicles waiting their turn to cross.
The police department said blocking intersections, especially along busy Broad Street, could bring a $100 citation.
“Motorists should be careful not to block intersections when traffic backs up, especially when lights change to red,” the department said in a release.
