The Atlanta Regional Commission has secured $3.8 million in state funds to install improved bus stop signs in Atlanta and four metro counties.

Bush shelter, bench and sidewalk upgrades also will be provided at select stops. The project is for Atlanta outside Midtown and downtown (where federal funds will pay for new signage) and throughout Fulton, Clayton, Cobb and DeKalb counties, ARC said.

Currently, bus stop signs in areas served by more than one transit agency consist of small signs with the logos of each transit provider, but no route or destination information. The new pole-mounted signs will display key route information, as well as the bus stop number in numeric form and braille, phone numbers, websites and transit logos.

The ARC Regional Transit Committee applied for the funding out of the state’s Go! Transit bond fund on behalf of area transit providers. Work is expected to begin in 2018.
