BET to honor groups working on health issues

The BET Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will recognize the work of community-based organizations that focus on African-American women’s health in the metro Atlanta area.

The initiative is interested in groups that work in the areas of obesity prevention, mental health education, fitness & nutrition, chronic disease outreach (including cancer, HIV and strokes) and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Organizations can apply under one or two areas for awards during the calendar year. Applications are being accepted from Aug. 24 through Sept. 11. Applications can be submitted via E-mail at : BETFoundation@bet.net.

Five award recipients will be honored on Oct. 8.

Shelia has worked at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for more than 30 years. Previously, she worked at The Lexington Herald-Leader and The Louisville Defender. Her beat is a bit of a mixed bag that includes religion and spirituality, culture and trends, race and aging. She earned degrees from Spelman College and Northwestern University.
