In a recent letter to residents, Berkeley Lake Mayor Lois Salter quoted local emergency management specialists who advise relying on mobile phone alerts, not sirens in the event of severe thunderstorms, tornadoes or flooding. The city is recommending citizens download the free Ready Georgia mobile app because electronic media alerts easily reach more Gwinnett residents than sirens.

The Ready Georgia app allows residents to locate nearby shelters, and provides a checklist of emergency supplies. There are also maps to see traffic incidents and detours, location of shelters, and hurricane evacuation routes. Stream Gauges report on local bodies of water at risk for flooding.

Only six of Gwinnett’s 15 cities have tornado sirens including Berkeley Lake, Dacula, Duluth, Norcross, Sugar Hill and Suwanee.
