Berkeley Lake Mayor Lois Salter informed citizens in January the city would be investigating the possibility of establishing a City Marshal program versus the security guard program currently in use. On May 21 the Berkeley Lake City Council voted unanimously to establish the position of City Marshal.

City Marshals will be hired and paid directly by the city and patrol in a marked city-owned vehicle, similar to police vehicles. While the plan is still under development, Berkeley Lake hopes to begin with one full-time officer and discontinue the use of security guards over time, all without an increase in taxes. In addition, the city has coordinated with Gwinnett Police to increase patrol of the community.
