Besides being a walking/running/biking trail and potential future transit corridor, the Atlanta Beltline is an arboretum – all 22 miles of it – and it’s won a 2016 Excellence in Partnership Award from the Arbor Day Foundation.
The award recognizes “innovative, strategic and/or pioneering collaborative efforts of organizations to advance forestry efforts on a local, state, national or international level,” the Lincoln, Neb.-based foundation said.
The Atlanta Beltline Arboretum is divided into five segments for creeks, forests and industrial reclamation. Trees Atlanta has planted 10 acres of native grass and wildflower prairie along the Eastside Trail, and the arboretum is being expanded to the Westside Trail.
The Beltline is one of 17 award recipients to be recognized Friday, Arbor Day, at a ceremony in Nebraska.
