Avondale Estates commissioners recently met with Euramex Management and reviewed what new Mayor Jonathan Elmore described as a “rough draft” of plans for developing 17 downtown acres. The commissioners agreed the project needs more green space.

“Let’s face it,” said Elmore, an architect, “developers don’t like giving things away. I understand that—they need to make money. But our zoning requires 15 percent [of the development must have] open space and half of that has to be public space.” Preliminary plans call for 250 to 300 apartments and another 80 to 100 townhomes on the former Fenner Dunlop property, with most of the retail lining North Avondale Road.

Elmore believes the developer will return with more definitive plans by early summer, and that actual construction may start roughly this time next year.
