Representatives from Avondale Estates’ commission and Downtown Development Authority will meet with Avila Real Estate partners Monday to discuss the city’s first-draft wish list for the developer’s proposed downtown project.

This will be Avila’s (formerly Euramex Management) second meeting with the city in the last two weeks. The developer owns 13 acres comprising the old Fenner Dunlop/Georgia Duck and Cordage mills that date to the early 20th century.

It appears Avila has become more active of late in starting on the Avondale project. Indeed, it recently posted an artist’s rendition showing several views of the project on its website at http://avilare.com/278oak/.

On Wednesday the city held a work session asking for resident input to the wish list. Over 50 people showed up and some of the more important items include:

  • Connecting Washington and Parry Streets, which would form a southern border to the development.
  • Establishing a street grid within the development
  • Building a roundabout at Laredo Drive, at the development's eastern edge, near Savage Pizza
  • Building a retention pond that could potentially collect the city's storm water on the east side, and also constructing an accompanying park.

“We are asking them to do things they aren’t required to do,” Mayor Jonathan Elmore said. “That means we will have to pay for these. Part of the negotiations will be figuring how much we can afford.”
