A troubled relationship turned violent Sunday morning when a man’s girlfriend shot and killed him in Douglas County and then drove away from the scene and killed herself, authorities said.

John Malone, 48, was shot multiple times outside of the trucking terminal where he worked in Lithia Springs, said Lt. Glenn Daniel, a spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Malone died shortly after sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at 7:10 a.m., Daniel said.

The girlfriend has not yet been identified, as the sheriff’s office continues to investigate the murder-suicide.

Witnesses described the shooter’s vehicle, which deputies found a short distance from the scene near Thornton Road.

The girlfriend was found dead inside the vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Daniel said.

Daniel said the man and woman had been dating for about 18 months.

“From what we understand, they had been having recent troubles,” he said.
