Austell is raising water and sewer rates effective the first of the year.

The minimum bill, for the first 2,000 gallons of water, will rise 50 cents, with city customers paying $6.52 and customers outside the city limits $7.02. Rates for other levels of water usage have gone up 25 cents per 1,000 gallons for both kinds of customers.

Sewer rates will go up 18 cents per 1,000 gallons, to $5.67 for city customers and $5.93 for out-of-city customers.

The council approved the rate hikes Dec. 7. The last increase occurred Oct. 1, 2008. Austell serves about 3,200 customers, with 63 percent inside the city limits. For details, visit www.austellga.gov.
