Registration is underway for the free Austell Police Citizens Academy.

Classes will begin 7-9 p.m. on Sept. 10 until Oct. 15 at the Austell Police Department, 2721 Joe Jerkins Blvd., Austell.

Participants will learn about the department’s daily operations and scope of authority.

On the first night, they should wear loose clothing since they will be participating in the physical standards required by the Austell Police Department for hiring purposes.

However, participants will not be asked to participate in any activity that they feel would be harmful to their health.

They will be taught how to assist the police by being aware of their surroundings and how to de-escalate developing situations.

Classes will be taught on K-9 operations, use of speed detection devices, defensive tactics, gun safety and other topics.

Also, a trip to the firing range will involve firing a weapon carried by the officers.
