Austell natural gas prices may be going up by two percent beginning Aug. 1.

Austell Mayor Joe Jerkins said recently the increase is due to the warm winter.

Natural gas sales have dipped by $11 million in gross sales and decreased by close to $900,000 in the city’s budget, Denise Soesbee, the city’s finance director, told the AJC.

However, the anticipated increase is two percent less than what it could have been since all of the bonds were paid last year, “the first time since I’ve been mayor or longer,” said Jerkins who has served as mayor since 1989.

Established in 1954, Austell Gas System, a natural gas distribution utility, serves more than 53,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the cities of Austell, Douglasville and Powder Springs and in portions of Cobb and Douglas counties.
