A new Habitat for Humanity subdivision may be built in Austell by the end of next year.
The Austell City Council is expected to decide at 7 p.m. Monday in City Hall, 2716 Broad St. S.W. on whether to approve a rezoning request by Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta in Smyrna.
The 18 houses would be built on around 8.5 acres at 5810 Maxham Road, David McGinnis, president and CEO of this Habitat for Humanity office said during a planning and zoning commission meeting when the proposal was recommended for approval last month.
The 1600-square-foot houses on 10,080 square-foot lots each will have a 20-year mortgage and cost about $135,000, he said.
A typical family living in a Habitat house has an annual income of about $40,000 and pays around $500 to $600 a month for their mortgage payment, he added.
If accepted in the program, each homeowner has to work 100 hours on construction of another Habitat house plus 100 hours of construction on his own house and attend 100 hours of financial classes, McGinnis said.
