Austell Mayor Joe Jerkins said during Monday’s pre-agenda meeting he will include $200,000 in next year’s city budget to tear down the first five of 25 houses in the city that were damaged by the 2009 flood.

Jerkins said the houses are mainly on Sanders Drive and Pontiac Circle.

The city will run legal ads for four Fridays, beginning April 10, requesting the appearance of the owners of these five houses at the May 4 city council meeting.

“We’re hoping these individuals will tear down these houses so that we don’t have to pay. There is no doubt that all of these buildings are unsafe to children in the neighborhood,” said Fire Chief Tim Williams.
