If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to turn leftover food and stuff in your yard into something folks with green thumbs call “Black Gold,” here’s your chance.

On Sept. 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the city of Alpharetta and its natural resources commission will be hosting a free class about composting. The class will be held at the Alpharetta Public Works Department at 1790 Hembree Road.

The class will conducted by master gardeners from the UGA Cooperative Extension in north Fulton County. The class is aimed to give participants all the information they need to make their own compost.

It’s a hands-on class, so be prepared to get a little dirty.

According to a release on the event, compost combines food scraps, yard waste, newspaper and other materials. When all of that stuff decomposes, it enriches soil with nutrients, which can improve the quality of your garden and help protect the quality of water in streams and lakes.

Composting can also be fun, easy and inexpensive, the city says.

While the class is free, registration is required. To sign up, head to Eventbrite or call 678-297-6200.
