Atlanta has won a $50,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to expand its green infrastructure use and protect water quality.

The city was one of 17 communities nationwide to receive grants, which totaled $950,000.

Green infrastructure uses vegetation and soil to manage rainwater where it falls, keeping polluted stormwater from entering sewer systems and waterways in local communities. Examples include green roofs, rain gardens and alternative designs for streets and buildings.
