The Georgia Department of Transportation has a full slate of interstate roadwork planned for this weekend, but while Sunday’s forecast might be favorable for construction crews, Saturday’s prediction of an 80 percent chance of rain will not be.

Here’s what you need to know to dodge the rain and the roadwork:

Construction planned on most metro interstates

Motorists will encounter several construction zones on the Perimeter, beginning with sign structure work overnight Friday night that will shut down two southbound lanes of I-285 from Lavista Road to Lawrenceville Highway.

Striping on I-285 northbound will require up to three lane closures from the MARTA Indian Creek station to Chamblee Tucker Road Friday and Saturday nights.

On the west side, two northbound lanes of I-285 northbound will be closed from Camp Creek Parkway to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

Two lanes will be shut down on I-285 northbound from Hollowell Parkway to South Atlanta Road all weekend.

On I-20, one eastbound lane will be closed from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard throughout the weekend, while one westbound lane will be shut down from McDaniel Street to MLK.

Also on I-20, two eastbound lanes will be closed all weekend between Six Flags Parkway and Fulton Industrial Boulevard.

Work on Spaghetti Junction will block various ramp lanes all weekend, while just north of there, crews will be shifting traffic on the ramp from I-85 northbound to Pleasantdale and Northcrest roads.

Work this weekend on the I-75 Express Lanes project will block one southbound lane of I-75 from Ga. 92 to the Canton Road Connector from 9 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday as well as two eastbound and three westbound lanes of I-285 at I-75 from 9 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday.

South of Atlanta, one lane of I-75 southbound will be closed all weekend from Hudson Bridge Road to Jonesboro Road, while one northbound lane of I-75 will be closed from I-675 to Ga. 138.

Weekend weather will be wet and dry

All of the planned roadwork is weather-permitting, which means it could be a washout on Saturday.

Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton is predicting an 80 percent chance of rain Saturday, followed by mostly sunny skies on Sunday.

Temperatures will be much cooler, topping out in the mid-80s each day. Morning lows will be around 73 Saturday and 66 Sunday, Minton said.
