A 63-year-old Forsyth County man was treated for mild hypothermia Tuesday evening after he was rescued from the bottom of a well he fell into while working on it, according to Capt. Jason Shivers with the Forsyth County Fire Department.

Shivers said it was not known how the man fell into the well, which contained waist-deep water. But there were family members helping and they called rescuers almost immediately. He said that quick response kept the man from suffering more serious injuries.

"He's in good shape. He's in good spirits. ... Just wet," Shiver said.

The man, whose name was not released, was hoisted 30 feet from the bottom of the well about 20 minutes after a rescue team arrived at the house on Nichols Drive in unincorporated Forsyth County.

Throughout the operation, Shivers said, the man was conscious and talking with rescuers as they set up an "A-frame," which resembles a tripod, that was used to lower a firefighter to the man at the bottom of the well.

Shivers said this kind of rescue was routine, but it was complicated by the weather: The property is in a  subdivision where the roads remain covered in ice.
