Metro Atlanta drivers needed to be extra patient during Thursday afternoon’s commute due to three major accidents on the interstate.

In Fulton County, a crash involving multiple vehicles — including a tractor trailer and a school bus — happened on I-285 northbound before Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The bus was on its way to a school and no students were on the bus, Atlanta Public Schools told Channel 2 Action News. By 4:45 p.m., all lanes were open, but heavy congestion in the area was causing delays of more than an hour, the Georgia Department of Transportation said.

The Georgia State Patrol said a hit-and-run driver caused a chain-reaction wreck between the bus, a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle. Six people were transported to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

In Cobb County, a dump truck overturned on I-75 northbound past North Marietta Parkway and south of Allgood Road around 3 p.m., GDOT said. Tons of dirt spilled onto the roadway, the news release said. All lanes were cleared by 5:15 p.m., but heavy congestion and delays continued.

In Gwinnett County, three of six lanes were temporarily blocked after an accident on I-85 southbound at Beaver Ruin Road (Exit 102). All lanes have been cleared.

Motorists were urged to use alternate routes to avoid extended delays, GDOT said.
