Covenant House Georgia, a shelter for homeless and at-risk youth in northwest Atlanta, is getting into urban agriculture with a $40,000 grant obtained by the city.

The Mayor’s Office of Sustainability will work with Covenant House, 1559 Johnson Rd. NW, on a greenhouse project and ongoing business to supply vegetable and fruit seedlings to community gardens. The project includes the expansion of green space and edible gardens in the Atlanta University Center/Vine City Eco District. The aim is to ensure residents have access to healthy, locally grown food.

The grant was on this week’s agenda of the City Council Community Resources & Human Development Committee. Council action is necessary to ratify an application “inadvertently” made without its approval in December – and which went on to win one of four GRO1000 grants awarded by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. The grant takes the form of $25,000 cash and $15,000 in Miracle-Gro products.
