Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Stephen Alford has resigned after 17 years working for the school district.

The school district announced his resignation Monday to pursue other interests, but he will continue working in a consulting role for the communications department through Sept. 30.

Spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said Alford resigned of his own volition. Alford didn’t return messages to his cellphone.

Associate Superintendent Steven Smith said in a statement that Alford enhanced technology use in the communications department, overhauled school websites, integrated social media and produced award-winning publications and videos.

Executive Director of External Affairs Mikkal Hart Murunga will assume leadership of the communications department.
