Atlanta police have identified the teenager who was arrested early Sunday after allegedly shooting at an officer during a car chase stemming from what authorities suspect was a carjacking.

According to Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. Greg Lyon, 17-year-old Wayne Waters faces charges of felony obstruction of officers, aggravated assault, reckless conduct, interference with government property, theft by receiving stolen property auto, speeding, failure to obey a traffic control device, hit and run, reckless driving and attempting to elude police.

Police said that around 2 a.m., an APD officer stopped a vehicle believed to have been involved in a carjacking. The driver fled in the car, but later struck another car at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and Fort Street.

After the crash, the alleged carjacker, now identified as Waters, got out of the vehicle and reportedly fired at least one shot at a police officer. The officer fired one shot in return. Neither Waters nor the officer was struck.

Waters, who was with other passengers, attempted to flee but was captured and taken into custody, authorities said. Police did not provide details on the other passengers.

No other arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon.
