An Atlanta police officer was killed Monday when the sport utility vehicle he was driving ran off a Douglas County road and hit a tree.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Ryan Adrian Baird, 38, of Douglasville, was on Mann Road north of Stockmar Road just before 6:30 p.m. when his 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee left the roadway in a curve.

Baird, who was off-duty at the time, died in the crash.

Baird had been with the Atlanta Police Department for 3.5 years, and was assigned to the Community Service Division/Airport Section, according to department spokeswoman Kim Jones.

Jones said Baird is survived by a wife and three children.
