After a police officer stopped to help a driver who had run out of gas early Sunday morning, his patrol car was struck in a hit-and-run incident on a highway entrance ramp in downtown Atlanta.

The incident happened around 5 a.m. at the bottom of the Spring Street ramp entering I-75/85 North, where the police officer saw a stalled vehicle in the next lane. According to the Atlanta Police Department, the officer stopped his vehicle in a lane of traffic, turned on his blue lights and got out to approach the driver of the stalled vehicle.

Then, a car described as a silver Chrysler Sebring struck the rear passenger side of the patrol car. Neither the officer nor the other driver were injured, and the stalled vehicle was not damaged.

The suspect's vehicle left about 30 to 40 feet of skid marks, lost its driver's side mirror and fled the scene, according to police. They are on the lookout for the hit-and-run vehicle.
