The Atlanta City Council has approved an amendment to its building code allowing general repair work up to $10,000 to be performed without a building permit. The measure applies to an existing single-family, duplex, multi-family or non-residential structure, the council posted in its Facebook page.

The amendment raises the monetary threshold from $2,500 and “removes some of the regulatory burden on those seeking to perform repairs or building upgrades,” according to the post. It added that the change will reduce the number of annual permits by about one thousand and lets the Department of City Planning focus its resources on major projects including new construction.

The amendment passed unanimously at the city council’s June 19 meeting.
