An architectural and engineering consultant has been hired by Atlanta to keep an eye on the demolition and reconstruction of the Spring Street Viaduct, and see that the work doesn’t affect the adjacent Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Building.

The City Council recently approved a “risk mitigation and construction management support” contract worth $619,647 with the Arcadis/BPA Joint Venture. The agreement has a three-year term with 2 one-year renewal options.

The assignment calls for developing a baseline structural assessment of the Federal Building, vibration monitoring during construction, and a post-construction assessment.

Built in 1922, the viaduct carries Spring Street over active railroad tracks in downtown Atlanta and has extensive concrete and steel deterioration. The Federal Building is a 26-story tower at 77 Forsyth St.

Project manager is the Georgia Department of Transportation. The city is working with GDOT and the General Services Administration, overseer of federal properties.
