Al-Farooq Masjid, Atlanta's largest mosque, opened its doors on 14th Street N.W. on Sunday, proudly showing off to invited guests the $10 million edifice with it 65-foot-high dome over the main prayer hall.

The main prayer hall accommodates about 1,100 worshipers.

Dignitaries were invited to view the Al-Farooq Mosque.

A 500-year-old Quran is on display in the lobby as hors d' oeuvres are served.

Al-Farooq mosque's minaret, the tall slender tower with a balcony from which a muezzin calls Muslims to prayer, rises 146 feet. The Bank of America is 1,023 feet tall.

The interior of the gold dome in the main prayer area is typical of historic Ottoman Empire design.

Shoes , which are not allowed inside the prayer areas, are stored in wooden shelves.

Dana Malas, of Denver, points her camera skyward, photographing the intricate detail of the dome of the Al-Farooq Mosque. Malas, a native Atlantan, was with her father, Mohammad Malas, one of the many contributors to the new mosque.

In stocking feet, Congressman John Lewis meets Medhat Elmesky, the architect of the mosque.
