Backers of a new downtown stadium for the Atlanta Falcons are trying to keep the project alive by re-crafting the deal to avoid a legislative vote on whether to enable $300 million in public funding.
“It would be nice if we didn’t have to ask the members of the General Assembly to take further action,” Gov. Nathan Deal told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday. “But I don’t have any assurance at this point in time if that’s going to be achievable. Those are questions that still have to be answered.”
Deal, who has become increasingly involved in the issue in recent weeks, said the state, the team and the city of Atlanta will spend the next 15 days reassessing “whether or not this is something that can move forward.”
