Atlanta elementary school lockdown over, still no explanation

An unexplained lockdown at a southeast Atlanta elementary school has ended.

It's unclear why Humphries Elementary was shuttered Thursday morning. A woman who answered the phone there at 11:25 a.m. confirmed the school was locked down. At 12:30 p.m., a woman who answered the phone there said the incident was over.

Messages seeking comment left with principal Donald Clark and with the school system superintendent's office have not been returned. The school twice referred questions to the school system's communications department; spokespeople there did not return calls for comment.

A worker at a nearby gas station said he heard a helicopter overhead but was unsure what was going on.

Humphries Elementary is on Humphries Drive near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
