Police are investigating a weekend shooting that left a 39-year-old Atlanta man dead.

The victim, identified Monday by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as Kenard Barnette, was found shot multiple times about 11:30 p.m. Friday in the 1900 block of Metropolitan Parkway, according to police.

Detectives are working to identify the shooter, Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee said.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was in a vehicle with the gunman when an argument escalated and a shot was fired. They both got out of the car after the first shot, and the victim was hit several more times before the shooter got into the car and left, Chafee said.

An investigation is ongoing.
