An Atlanta City Council committee has signed off on legislation waiving certain ordinances to allow a “Legacy Campout” for young people at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site to use city parkland for overnight camping.

The National Park Service, manager of the King Historic Site at 423 John Wesley Dobbs Ave. NE, aims to have 100 youth – roughly double last year’s participation – at the 5th Annual Legacy Campout, Sept. 23-24.

Because the Historic Site is not large enough to accommodate 100 campers, NPS has asked to use the city’s recreational area at Irwin and Jackson streets, next to the Atlanta MLK Recreation Center, according to an ordinance sponsored by Council Member Kwanza Hall and approved recently by the Community Development & Human Resources Committee.

The campout will be hosted by the Greening Youth Foundation and King Historic Site as part of the NPS Centennial, an event website says. It is free to metro Atlanta middle school students ages 11 to 14.
