Atlanta archbishop ordains Latino bishop

Luis Rafael Zarama was ordained as the Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Atlanta on Tuesday Sept. 29, 2009, at the Cathedral of Christ the King. Zarama He is the first Latino auxiliary bishop ordained for Atlanta.

Zarama was ordained as the auxilary bishop for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, the first Latino bishop ordained for the Atlanta Archdiocese.

During the ceremony Luis Rafael Zarama's head is anointed with oil by Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory.

The office of the Episcopacy is conferred by the laying on of hands.

Archbishop Jose Gomez of the Archdiocese of San Antonio places his hands on Luis Rafael Zarama.

More than 2,500 attended the ordination at the Cathedral of Christ the King. Overflow crowds watched from the church's parish hall and and the sanctuary of Second Ponce De Leon Baptist Church.

There was no hiding the smile of Luis Rafael Zarama as he is seated among fellow Bishops for the first time during his ordination ceremony.
