A senior prank did more than ruffle some feathers at a middle Georgia high school.

One 2009 Hawkinsville High School graduate and 16 seniors allegedly let eight chickens loose inside the school, Major Jason Fremont with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office told the AJC Thursday.

But the prank didn't stop there. The group also scattered chicken-feed kernels in the school and put sardines in the air vents last week, police said.

"They went in there with the intention of setting up the chickens in a little plastic swimming pool," Fremont said. "They really made a mess."

Damages from the prank totaled $2,500, Fremont said. The mess has since been cleaned up.

All 17 involved in the prank last week now face felony criminal trespassing charges, he said. The chickens are reportedly all OK.

A student whose dad works at the school apparently used a key to let the group inside the school. Now, the high school seniors, including the valedictorian, may not be participating in the June 11 graduation ceremony, Principal Mary Royal has said. They have also been suspended.

"Just about all of these kids are quality kids. Smart kids and high achievers," Fremont said. "They just did a really stupid thing."
