Relatives have identified an armed robbery suspect who shot and killed himself Thursday after leading DeKalb County police on a short car chase.

He was 23-year-old Jamal O. Young.

According to police, officers saw young Thursday afternoon still driving a car he had taken that morning during an armed robbery of an in-home daycare provider.

It was around 5:20 p.m. Thursday when police spotted him in a maroon Nissan Altima that had been reported stolen several hours earlier. Young was leaving the parking lot at the Galleria of South DeKalb Mall, the scene of his second armed robbery that day, authorities said.

Young led police on a short chase on Interstate 285, and exited at Bouldercrest Road. He pulled into a parking lot at the DeKalb Inn and sped through a vacant lot until he crashed into a utility pole.

As officers rushed to surround the car they heard shots, police said in a statement.

“DeKalb officers were not involved in any use of force. The suspect was found deceased inside the vehicle having sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,” the statement from police said.
