The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Building Health Communities for Active Aging initiative selected the Atlanta Regional Commission to receive the 2011 Commitment Award for the Lifelong Mableton project.

Lifelong Mableton, a strategy to implement smart growth policies to allow residents to age in place, was one of two initiatives recognized this year. The Mableton program began in 2009, and includes a flexible zoning code for easier mixed-use development, a community garden and a community walking program.
